Blackjack is the workhorse of every casino party. It's easy to learn, fast to play, and accommodates beginners better than any other table game. Here's the full procedure for casino party blackjack.

Card values

  • 2–10: Face value
  • J, Q, K: 10
  • Ace: 1 or 11, whichever helps the hand

The goal is to beat the dealer's hand without going over 21.

Dealing procedure

  1. Players place bets in the betting circle.
  2. Deal one card face-up to each player, left to right, then one face-down to yourself.
  3. Deal a second card face-up to each player, then one face-up to yourself.
  4. If your up-card is an Ace, offer insurance.
  5. Starting at first base (your left), each player decides: hit, stand, double, or split.
  6. After every player acts, flip your hole card. Hit on 16 or below; stand on hard 17 or higher. (Confirm whether your house hits or stands on soft 17.)
  7. Pay winners, take losers, push ties.

Payouts

  • Standard win: 1:1 (a $25 bet wins $25)
  • Blackjack (Ace + 10-value on first two cards): 3:2 (a $20 bet wins $30)
  • Insurance: 2:1, paid only if dealer has blackjack

Get comfortable doing 3:2 math quickly — half the bet plus the bet. $30 → $45. $50 → $75. $70 → $105.

Hand signals

Always require hand signals, even at a fun event. It protects you on disputes and keeps the cameras (or memories) honest.

  • Hit: Tap the table
  • Stand: Wave hand flat over cards
  • Double: Place matching chips next to bet, point one finger up
  • Split: Place matching chips next to bet, point two fingers in a V

Common mistakes new dealers make

  • Dealing too fast for new players. Read the table — slow down when guests are learning.
  • Forgetting to offer insurance on dealer Aces.
  • Paying blackjacks at 1:1 instead of 3:2 (this happens more than you'd think).
  • Not protecting the deck — keep cards over the table, never in your lap.
